Brief
To replace a structurally unstable, existing timber jetty.
Solution
To design a jetty capable of withstanding winter flooding, improve the stability of the riverbank and allow better access to the water, all whilst enhancing the area by making the most of the views. To do this, we built a bespoke 9m by 4m aluminium framed, composite clad jetty, decked with GRP grid complete with a 2m x 1.2m lower section for paddle boarding access and a replacement step set to allow safe access from the garden above. By choosing to deck the jetty with GRP grid, it allows flood water to rise and recede with minimal silt depositing on the surface as well as allowing light to penetrate the river to help enhance aquatic life.
Challenges
The main challenge for this project was access to the river via the existing structurally unstable steps. When designing and building the jetty sections we also had to take into account the limited access to the side of the house so we needed to build the project in manageable parts. The site was also flooded whilst we were on site so when we went to install the steps the jetty was under water, so it had to be left for four days. At RA Marine we pride ourselves on our flexible approach. This ethos enables us to meet the challenges we face with projects and this project was a good example of this. Our client was pleased with the end result, as were we.
